Lecture Logistics: Putting the Pieces Together
By: Leah Stanford
There are many moving parts that must come together to prepare schedules for the M1 and M2 preclinical courses. The integrated curriculum spans 14 courses, includes over 1,100 sessions, and is taught by approximately 400 different faculty members. Now in our third year of the integrated curriculum, we remain focused on improving the process each year. One constant, however, is our reliance on the expertise and dedication of our faculty.
For the 2025–2026 academic year, one of the most significant changes has been the process for scheduling lecture sessions. This new approach has been made possible through the support of the Vice Chancellor’s Office and the Clinical Chairs, who have helped coordinate learning experiences for the first half of the year.
To ensure faculty are fully prepared to facilitate their sessions, here are a few reminders on what to expect and how to prepare:
- Lecture Requests: All lecture assignments are coordinated through Clinical Department Chairs or Course Directors.
- Calendar Invites: You will receive an invite through the M1/M2 shared calendar—please accept it to confirm your availability.
- Timing: Arrive 10 minutes early and conclude at the 50-minute mark.
- Clear Objectives: Use the session objectives provided by the Office of Medical Education as the foundation for your lecture.
- Advance Preparation: Submit your presentation, prework, supplemental materials, and exam questions at least 4 weeks in advance.
- Student-Level Focus: Tailor your content for preclinical learners, keeping it clear and clinically relevant.
- Assessment Alignment: Use validated exam questions when possible, and align all questions with the session objectives. When available, previous exam questions will be shared.
When the plan is clear and preparation happens early, lecture day runs smoothly and efficiently. Think of it as assembling a puzzle—once each piece is in place, you can focus on delivering your content with confidence, knowing the details are handled. The Office of Medical Education is grateful for your time, expertise, and commitment to shaping the next generation of physicians.
